Growth Mindset for Success in ALL Areas

December 14, 20246 min read

By simply changing your mindset you can transform your health, fitness, and even financial position.
Bear with me on this one...

In the pursuit of better health, fitness, and financial well-being, many have a tendency to look solely to strategies like diets, workout routines, or budget templates. But there is another key factor even more powerful in determining your success:
your mindset.
Research suggests that by changing the way you think, you can significantly improve both your physical and financial health. By cultivating a growth-oriented mindset you can create life-changing transformations in all of these areas, and this is supported by current scientific findings.

So let's look at the areas of health, fitness and finance...

There is a definite mindset connection when it comes to health and fitness, and your mindset is far more than just a motivational boost. In fact, the mind-body connection is so strong that it can influence physical outcomes in some really surprising ways.

For example, research conducted by Alia Crum, a Stanford University psychologist PMID: 17425538, demonstrated the impact of mindset on physical health. In her study, hotel housekeepers who were informed that their daily work (cleaning rooms, vacuuming, etc.) met the Surgeon General’s recommendations for an active lifestyle, showed improvements in weight, blood pressure, and body fat percentage after four weeks - even though their actual behaviour hadn’t changed significantly. By simply changing how they viewed their tasks, it led to measurable physical benefits.

This suggests that believing in the value of your actions - whether it’s your daily walk or a quick workout - can actually make those actions more effective in shaping your health. So, in other words, by framing physical activities in a positive light, you can amplify the impact of those physical activities on your body. This makes total sense when you look at the difference in how you feel towards something that you see in a positive light vs something you see as a burden or chore.

Now a “growth mindset” - the concept developed by psychologist Carol Dweck - refers to a belief that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Dweck’s research has shown that people with a growth mindset are more likely to embrace challenges and persist through obstacles .

Within a fitness context, having a growth mindset would mean seeing each workout as an opportunity to improve rather than a chore. Individuals with this kind of mindset are more likely to stay consistent, try new routines, and view any setbacks (like missed workouts or plateaus) as part of the process, rather than as failures. They continue to see themselves succeeding and have no issue with adjusting their program along the way, to keep them moving forward.
Studies have shown that individuals who view their fitness journey through a growth mindset experience much greater success in reaching their goals than those who believe their abilities are fixed.

Beyond your fitness goals, mindset also plays a crucial role in managing stress, which is closely linked to both physical and mental health. Something which I have experienced myself more recently and had to address immediately.
Chronic stress has been shown to lead to a range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, weakened immune function, and obesity. However, research has found that the way we think about stress can actually change its impact on our health.
In one notable study, researchers found that participants who viewed stress as a “helpful response” (one that could improve performance and make them more resilient) had a lower risk of premature death compared to those who viewed stress as harmful.
PMID: 22201278
It would be interesting to have seen such a study conducted during the pandemic situation and it is definitely an area for further research.
But this mindset shift has shown it can empower individuals to use stress as a motivator that actually fuels their productivity and resilience, rather than overwhelming them.

Now, just as a positive mindset impacts health and fitness, it also plays a role in our financial well-being. Studies have also shown that individuals with a positive outlook on money are more likely to set and achieve financial goals, reduce debt, and build savings. In fact, having a “money growth mindset” (the belief that financial skills and knowledge can be developed) encourages more proactive financial behaviour and greater resilience when facing financial setbacks.

Research from Dr. Sarah Newcomb, a behavioural economist, highlights the impact of mindset on financial health. Her research revealed that people with a “scarcity mindset” (viewing money as always limited and hard to come by) were more likely to experience financial stress and make poor financial decisions, such as impulsive spending or avoiding budgeting altogether. On the flip side, her research showed that those with a "growth/abundance" mindset tended to approach money with optimism, take more calculated risks, and prioritize saving.

Despite all of this, shifting to a growth mindset does take practice, yet it is entirely achievable.
So here are
5 actionable steps for you to get started:

  1. Set Process-Oriented Goals: Rather than just focusing on an end goal (like losing 20 pounds or saving $/£10,000), set your goals based on daily actions - for example, committing to exercise four times a week or saving a specific amount of money each month.

  2. Reframe Your Challenges: View obstacles/challenges as opportunities to learn. For example, if you hit a fitness plateau, explore new workouts or consult a coach rather than getting discouraged. Keep moving forward...

  3. Practice Gratitude: Studies show that gratitude can reduce stress and increase mental well-being . Try keeping a gratitude journal focused on your progress, whether it's health, fitness or finances, or all three. PMID: 12585811

  4. Visualise Your Success: Regularly visualise exactly what you want to achieve and remind yourself why it’s important. Visualisation has been shown to improve motivation and can help you stay focused on your goals .

  5. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Connect with people who reinforce your growth-mindset, whether it’s a workout partner/group, a financial advisor, or an online community that encourages positivity and progress. Negative, fixed mindset individuals will always find things to complain about, avoid them...

Now it's time to take action, because knowledge is only powerful when it is put to appropriate use. Mindset isn’t just a mental trick, it’s a powerful tool that can change your life in many tangible ways. Whether it’s adopting a more positive outlook on your fitness journey, viewing stress as an empowering force, or shifting your money mindset, these beliefs have evidence based links to improved health, fitness, and financial stability.

So, if you’re looking to make lasting changes in your life, start by shifting your mindset. With intentionality and practice, you can create a foundation that supports lifelong health, financial security, and a sense of empowerment. After all, as the science shows, changing your mind can truly change your life.
